Lead pipes are most common in older homes. Look at the pipe where it comes in near your stopcock: lead is dull grey, soft, and shows a shiny silver colour if lightly scratched. It isn’t magnetic.
Lead can get into drinking water, especially water that has been sitting in the pipes. Replacing lead pipework removes that risk.
Moling is a way of laying a new pipe underground without digging a full trench. A small pit is dug at each end and a tool pushes the new pipe through the ground between them. Whether it’s suitable depends on the ground and the route.
